North Norfolk Railway – The Poppy Line

Another day on holiday in Norfolk, we visited the North Norfolk Railway. We always visit this steam railway when we are in Norfolk. The line runs from Sheringham to Holt via Weybourne. These are a few shots taken on a rather wet day but a very enjoyable end of season visit.

Flitch Way, Rayne Station

The Flitch Way is about fifteen miles long, it runs from Braintree station to Start Hill near Bishops Stortford. Back in the day it was connected to the main line at Stortford and ran to London. The Operators, Great Eastern Railways opened the line in 1869   The last passengers were on the 1st of March 1952 it continued running freight until the end of 1971.

It is now used as a safe traffic free environment for walkers, cyclists and horse riders and forms part of National Cycle Network Route 16.

North Norfolk Railway

Day 6:

Every time I go to Norfolk I can’t resist paying a visit to this wonderful steam & diesel Heritage Railway, I think it must be because it takes me back to my boyhood. Anyway, it is one of the best run & most scenic lines in this part of the World with it’s terminus in Sheringham which is a traditional seaside town it makes a great family day out.

The best place to start your journey is at the Holt end of the line. Car parking is free or though they do ask you to make a small voluntary contribution of £1. The big thing is you do not have a clock ticking on how long you are away, most people spend a day on the line. On busy days when the line holds it’s events then car parking can be a problem at either end of the line. Full details here.

The next station down the line is Weybourne. This station is like stepping back in time everything is as near as possible like it would have been back in the fifties. You must pay a visit to the loo's they are perfect including their Thomas Crapper & Co WC's. This is where the engine sheds are & if you plan your visit you can go on a tour.

This signal box here is on the station and you are normally allowed to visit.

Sheringham golf club.

At the time of writing this blog this loco plus another unit are on loan to the NNR from the Class 20 Locomotive Society. Later this year it is scheduled to be on loan to the Epping railway. It has just been repainted in this livery.
