Happisburgh

Day4:
We started the day on this east coast side of Norfolk. This eastern side of the British coast has been suffering with severe erosion for a number of years. A lot of properties & land has fallen into the North Sea so there is a lot of coastal
defences all the way through Norfolk & Suffolk. We only spent a few hours here so I know from previous visits there is so much more to this place.

Dungeness

Day two of our holiday was forecast to be a very bright sunny day so we set off to Dungeness. The beach is renowned amongst photographers for being very photogenic. Over the years the fishing industry has abandoned a number of old fishing boats and huts on the foreshore, these make good pictures. I would like to return at some point and try doing some sunrise or sunset shots.

South Foreland Lighthouse

This was the first lighthouse in the World to use electric light it was used to guide shipping through the Dover Straits. It is now a National Trust property, you can visit the top of the tower and the light.

Below is the second South Foreland Lighthouse, it was built at the same time as the main light further up the cliff. It’s job was to give a bearing by lining up the two lights for navigators to avoid the sand bank close to the approach to Dover. However  this proved to become unreliable soon after the light was commissioned due to the shifting nature of the sands & the light was switched off.
