I spent 3 days at the IWM Duxford whilst the preparations for the
“Daks over Duxford” event was taking place. I have two posts to put up. The first
is a selection of shots I took of the Douglas DC-3 Dakota & the Douglas
C-47 Skytrain, the military version of the DC-3.
This was a unique event, gathering together the
largest number of this wonderful aircraft that are still flying. The prototype first
flew on the 17th December 1935, exactly 32 years to the day after the first powered
flight was made by Wilbur and Orville Wright at Kitty Hawk, on the 17th December 1903, so, the Dakota is now over 84 years old. This aircraft
played a prominent role in WW2 particularly on the D-Day parachute & glider
landings. A number of the aircraft attending this event had crossed the
Atlantic via the Northern route to take part.
