Canterbury Cathedral

At the start of our week in Kent we looked at the weather forecast and it did not look good, lots of rain most days. However, by carefully planning our different destinations we managed to avoid the worst of the wet conditions with the exception of Tuesday, so that was the day we decided to visit Canterbury Cathedral. The Cathedral is undergoing a lot of major work both inside and out at the moment, this work will be going on for the next four years, behind the scaffolding and building works the fabric of the building is beautiful.

This candle burns in memory of Thomas A Becket, it marks the spot of his martyrdom.

Amnesty International's candle burns perpetually.

Margate Kent

I like Margate in the winter, like a lot of popular seaside places it takes on a beauty that you just don't see in the summertime. It is one of those traditional holiday resorts much loved by Londoners. They would come down the Thames on the Royal Daffodil, stopping at Southend pier, then crossing over to Margate before traveling on to France, then returning later that day. I traveled on her a number of times when I was a child and loved it every time.
